I first learned about this band in a post on Kirk Love’s Tumblr. “You probably never heard of ∆ (pronounced Alt-J since that’s what you type to get that symbol). You will.” Sure enough, I started noticing their name showing up in my Twitter feed and elsewhere, and finally took the plunge—their whole album is on SoundCloud, so it was easy to let myself get pulled in. And now I never want to leave.
This song, ❦ (Ripe & Ruin), gets me every time. No instruments, just voices—medieval, spooky, spare. One minute, twelve seconds. And don’t miss the transition to the cavernous chords in the next song on the record, “Tesselate.”
“Don’t let me drown, don’t breathe alone…”
